Deputy Chief John Davis issues an important safety reminder…..
Good Afternoon Everyone,
I would like to take a few moments of your day to reiterate something that most of us have heard hundreds of times during the Christmas season. Safety! Safety! Safety! It seems that no matter how safe we feel we are being, there is always room for improvement. Apparently, I am no exception to this theory.
Early this week I had the chance to be in Columbia, MO, and go out to dinner with my daughter….. good times. This was made even more special when my daughter repeated something to me that I have been saying to her for years. “Head up and eyes open”. You see, as we were walking to the restaurant from her car, I was checking and answering an e-mail for work. I was not paying attention to my surroundings, which is totally against what I have preached to, not only officers, citizens, and apparently, my daughter for years.
We see it all too often; people walking through parking lots, down sidewalks, through malls and stores, and sitting at stop lights looking at our cell phones with our minds so wrapped up in what we are looking at, that we fail to see the danger that is ahead of us. Now, even though I am a little embarrassed that my daughter had to remind her old sheepdog Dad of such a simple rule of safety, I am very proud that she has paid attention to what I have taught her over the years.
So please, as the Christmas season quickly approaches us, keep your heads up and your eyes open. Look ahead, to the side, and, yes, even behind so that you’re not caught off guard. From the Officers and Staff of the Lamar Police Department, may you have a joyful and Merry Christmas.
